The Ministry Minister of Science, ICT and Future Planning of Korea, Choi Yanghee, enhanced 5G policy cooperation with leading countries in 5G (US, Japan, China, EU) and discussed ways to create a convergence ecosystem at the “3rd Global 5G Event” held in Tokyo, Japan on May 24(Wed) and 25(Thr).
“Global 5G Event” is an international meeting for cooperation that five 5G leading countries(Korea, US, Japan, China, EU) take turns to hold in each continent. The meeting was attended by government officials from five countries and about 500 experts from the industry, academia and research community.
At the meeting, domestic and foreign mobile carriers, manufacturers, government officials of major countries shared each country’s 5G policies and had lively debate on future policy directions. Presentations particularly focused on the latest trend of convergence services between 5G and other industries(automobile, medicine, education, manufacturing etc.), and experts from major countries discussed ways to build a convergence ecosystem.
Organized in connection with the “WTP 2017 (Wireless Technology Park 2017)”, the biggest mobile communications exhibition in Japan, the meeting also provided opportunities to experience 5G convergence services of NTT Docomo etc., including smart manufacturing and smart transportation.
The Ministry announced that “5G Mobile Communications Industry Development Master Plan(December 2016) was drawn up in response to the increasing importance of 5G as an essential foundation of the hyper-connected intelligent information society and key strategies are being implemented in each of four areas (service, technology, standardization, ecosystem).”
The Ministry also announced that “the Ministry is planning to demonstrate 5G trial services at the 2018 PyeongChang Winter Olympics and commercialize it for the first time in the world to prepare for the upcoming 5G era,” adding that it hopes that the participants “visit Korea during the period of the Olympics and experience 5G trial services such as immersive media service from a player’s point of view and 5G self-driving bus.”
The next “4th Global 5G Event” is scheduled to be held in Korea around November this year.
